How the Mic Locker Actually Gets Used

Every studio posts a mic list. Almost nobody tells you which mic actually comes out of the drawer when the clock is running. So here’s ours — Warm Audio, Shure, sE, United Studio Technologies, Neumann — sorted by what they’re actually FOR.

The Neumann TLM 102 is the “stop auditioning” mic. The published curve explains why better than I can: 20 Hz to 20 kHz, ruler-flat through the mids, one polite lift above 6 kHz for presence. No hype bumps to fight, no character to work around. Vocals and acoustic instruments come back sounding like themselves, but slightly better dressed.

Neumann TLM 102 and Shure SM57 — two pillars of the Aina Studios mic locker

The SM57 is the law of the land. Snare top, guitar amps, and roughly four hundred other jobs since forever. For lead vocals we lean V7 instead — the response charts tell that story — but on instruments the 57 remains undefeated because it refuses to be impressed by anything, including being dropped.

Two different jobs, visible on paper: the 57’s midrange wall vs the TLM 102’s flat line with a polite lift. Illustrative, redrawn from published curves.

The UT Twin87 is the flagship vocal chair (two 87 voicings, one switch — its own post), Warm Audio fills the “vibe for the money” column — large-diaphragm color that would cost triple in vintage form — and sE covers the workhorse middle: drum overheads, sources that need honesty more than flattery, and the V7s on stage every week.

The philosophy: a locker isn’t a museum. Five brands, each with a job description, beats twenty trophies nobody plugs in. If a mic goes six months without leaving the drawer, it’s inventory, not equipment.

Buy microphones like you hire a team: for the job they do, not the name on the badge. Then let them do it.
